[news.groups] comp.unix.* results

laird@chinet.chi.il.us (Laird J. Heal) (12/15/90)

The voting to replace comp.unix.internals has ended, with the result,
according to the Call for Votes, for replacing comp.unix.internals with
comp.unix.wizards.

While I thought I had tried everything to drum up the vote, no notice was
ever posted to the still-active comp.unix.wizards. One of the very last
voters noted this and said he hardly ever looks at comp.unix.internals.
The Call For Votes was apparently garbled at some sites, although it got
here in one piece eventually. I did mail it out to a few voters at the
beginning. Still, in order to avoid possible later confusion, I broke
down and sent out 285 or so acknowledgements indicating how each vote
might be used. I got a handful of responses asking to switch the choice
to one "only" or the other, or to switch it out of an "only" bucket. Of
the fifteen or so bounced acknowledgements, most were quick to send their
own duplicate votes labeled as such.

The voting tallies for the respective categories were:

comp.unix.esoterica 61
comp.unix.esoterica only	16
comp.unix.internals 61
comp.unix.wizards 144
comp.unix.wizards only 19

Two tallies were to be met in order to replace comp.unix.internals. First,
at least two-thirds of the voters (with a 100-vote margin) must indicate a
preference for a new name over comp.unix.internals. Second, at least two-
thirds of the votes for the proposed names must be for the name indicated
by the first test. A voter expressed a desire to select only one name in
the first stage, where the `esoterica only' or `wizards only' choice meant
"I would rather have internals than the other name". The votes bore out
our general agreement to replace internals with only moderate disagreement
over the new name. Many comments indicated a preference for the name voted
for, and a willingness to accept the other.

The tally of votes for comp.unix.internals against comp.unix.esoterica was
61+19=80 to 61+16+144=221
The tally of votes for comp.unix.internals against comp.unix.wizards was
61+16=77 to 61+144+19=224

so the criteria for replacing the internals group are met either way.

The choice of the new name (comp.unix.esoterica or comp.unix.wizards) ran
61+16=77 to 144+19=163

As the name comp.unix.wizards received more than twice as many votes as
the name comp.unix.esoterica, the vote passed for comp.unix.wizards. I
will, then, send out a rmgroup message for comp.unix.internals in five
days, together with a newgroup for comp.unix.wizards and a request to
alias comp.unix.internals to comp.unix.wizards.

I personally think that our least confusing option is to put the old name
back in place - otherwise we might end up with so many variations of the
name that we might as well be dancing the tarantella.

The voters' mail addresses and choices follow. I attempted to weed out
duplicates based on user name or site!uid; since I received a few apparent
duplicates too late for acknowledgement, I have indicated them by including
both mailboxes from the respective From: lines; I also put two optional
addresses there when someone's mailer indicated "uunet!uid" as a very bogus
return address, according to uunet!MAILER-DEMON.

I fail to understand Laird's math. According to his post, the votes
were:

The voting tallies for the respective categories were:

comp.unix.esoterica 61
comp.unix.esoterica only	16
comp.unix.internals 61
comp.unix.wizards 144
comp.unix.wizards only 19

That makes 144+19= 163 votes for wizards and 16+61=77 against, making
the proposal fail the 100-vote margin by 14 votes.

Please don't rush this too much. As big of a mistake as the change to
c.u.internals was, let's don't commit another mistake by switching things
over too quickly.

How about -

1). In five days, issue a newgroup for comp.unix.wizards along
with a request to alias comp.unix.internals.
2). Wait a month and issue an rmgroup for comp.unix.internals
along with a reminder to perform the aliasing.

God, I feel sorry for this guy. How does he ever get anything done
with that nice value? Maybe he should try chfn and see if he can get
that pri= removed ...

If you spend no time trying to understand his explanation of the meaning of
the categories, then you can come to this conclusion. Just what do you think
the distinction between the only and non-only categories is? Your arithmetic
lumps them together, and only deals with 4 of the 5 values. On the other hand,
a less lazy analysis would lead you to realize that the categories imply
different orderings.

comp.unix.esoterica esoterica > wizards > internals 61

where ">" means "is preferred to". This gives us

esoterica > internals	61+16+144 = 221
internals > esoterica	61+19 = 80

wizards > internals	61+144+19 = 224

Disclaimer: I didn't vote, have no preference, and find the whole exercise
pointless and immature.

I was hoping not to have to use the clause, but I was not sure that there
would be enough votes in a tripartite scheme to carry the 100+ margin, so
I created a quintapartite scheme.

I also mailed individual attributions in part in order to head off too
much flambescence after the vote - as I mentioned, several voters changed
to "only" (or in at least one case from "only") so I have to assume that
they got the message.

To quote from the Call:

If you want to vote to replace comp.unix.internals only if
your choice passes, use 'comp.unix.esoterica only' or
'comp.unix.wizards only' on the Subject: line, otherwise I
will not count your vote against the 2/3 majority needed to
conform to the Guidelines. That is, a vote reading
     Subject: comp.unix.esoterica only
is a vote against comp.unix.wizards but a vote reading
     Subject: comp.unix.esoterica
is a vote for esoterica but possibly also for wizards.

and that is how I tallied them.
