Christoph Uloth <chris@ec.uwa.oz.au>, Andrew C. Esh <andrew@jhereg.osa.com>, and others have raised the notion that a newsgroup is needed for discussions of the Internet Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and discussions of software managers and agents for use with SNMP. There have been a number of postings outside the news.groups arena supporting creating such a newsgroup. I suspect that this is actually a case where what is needed is to get someone to create an "inet" distribution newsgroup, but to cover things all the way round, I am posting a formal USENET Request for Discussion. The formal proposal follows. Please post followups to news.groups [[per the guidelines; the original request was for both news.groups and comp.protocols.tcp-ip -- tale ]] FORMAL PROPOSAL NAME: comp.protocols.snmp (unmoderated) CHARTER: Discussions of the Internet SNMP protocol and software agents and managers for use with SNMP. Discussions of SNMP-based network management. -- Randall Atkinson randall@Virginia.EDU

I have inquired of the SNMP mailing list maintainer at NYSERnet whether it would be agreeable to gateway the comp.protocols.snmp newsgroup with the existing SNMP mailing list if the newsgroup were created. The answer to whether they will be gatewayed is mostly in the hands of the list maintainer. I personally would prefer to see the list promoted to an Internet newsgroup (those with the "inet" distribution) and simply gatewayed in the same manner as the TCP-IP list is with comp.protocols.tcp-ip. Perhaps the "inet newsgroup czar" could be persuaded to do this ???
