[news.groups] Newsgroup created: alt.sys.hp48

bson@rice-chex.ai.mit.edu (Jan Brittenson) (06/11/91)

This is the announcement of a newsgroup for discussing all products
and topics directly as well as indirectly relevant to the
Hewlett-Packard 48 series of handhelds/calculators. The newsgroup is
neither moderated nor archived. It may take a couple of days until it
reaches your site.

The alt.sys.hp48 group is an off-shoot from comp.sys.handhelds,
which has been swamped in HP-48 related postings for well over a year.
A split has been discussed, but the obvious solution: a split over a
specific product line, rather than someone's abstract interpretation
of what makes the newsgroups hierarchy aesthetically pleasing, has
lately been largely ignored. It is my conviction that this
bureaucratic clown show isn't representative of the majority of
comp.sys.handhelds readers, and so in desperation I offered to create
alt.sys.hp48 if I received at least 25 positive responses. The list of
respondents is included at the end of this message.

Hopefully, alt.sys.hp48 will be an active group, proving the value
of an HP-48 product line specific newsgroup in the comp.* hierarchy.
The creation of which will supersede alt.sys.hp48.

It is my hope that the discussions in this newsgroup will be
carried out in the polite and mutually respectful tradition we have
all learned to love in comp.sys.handhelds. Please think twice before
posting a flame, or better still: go have lunch and consider a more
meaningful response!
