News.software.readers has passed, 174-21. There were five duplicate votes (same vote cast both times), and no-one changed their votes. Three votes were received after the deadline. 174-100 = 74 > 21 174/21 = 8.3:1 > 2:1 Some comments: I proposed the newsgroup as one place to collect all of the news-reader discussions. Most of it seemed to end up in news.software.b - a rather unintuitive place, in my opinion. Both before and while the discussion and voting period were running, I saw newsreader questions posted to news.admin, news.misc, news.sysadmin, and other groups. In some cases, people said "I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question." Some people didn't like the proposal, and spoke with their votes. I answered one person's comments personally, but I didn't solicit him to change his vote. The major objections were: lack-of-focus - too broad, not enough volume, didn't like the name, didn't like the charter as proposed, or didn't want "religious wars". Some suggested that I should have renamed news.software.b and/or news. software.nn. I specifically avoided this because I wanted to keep things simple. Maybe I was wrong about this, but I only received a few comments about it. Finally, it'll be a long time before I run another newsgroup vote. Fortunately, it wasn't a particularly controversial vote like the m.a.g. one was (-: Here's the charter and related info that I posted in the CFV: ===== Newsgroup news.software.readers is an unmoderated discussion for newsreading software. Potential topics for discussion include: - rn and its variants - tass - xrn - gnus - Other platforms (Mac, MSDOS, VM) - design issues - if you decide to write or significantly modify one. Religious wars - rn vs nn, or gnus vs xrn - are not encouraged. Technical issues about nn, notes, anu-news, and PSU NetNews will probably find more answers in their respective newsgroups, but they are not excluded from discussion here. -end of charter- Don't look to me for answers - I'm simply proposing this group as a way to move news-reader traffic out of news.software.b. I probably know less than most readers of these forums about Unix news readers.
