[comp.sys.intel] Wanted Info on the iAPX 432 and iMAX

halls@boulder.Colorado.EDU (Andy Halls) (03/19/87)

I'm doing a study of the iAPX 432 system for my operating systems class. I'm
particularly interested in the iMAX OS. I have copies of Kahn et.al paper
from 1981 and the Intel book "A Programmer's View...".

I understand that the 432 never made it as a commercial product. (Is this true?)
Could someone send me pointers to a discussion of it's demise? I would
also be interested in your perspective on the system.

As usual please reply to me via mail. I'll post a summary if anyone is
interested.

I attended an Intel 286 class several years ago which started off with
an overview of the past, present, and future of microprocessors. One of
the market segments discussed by the Intel spokesman were "multi-tasking,
multi-processor systems". He said they had learned a lot about this
market with the iAPX432, and they expected this to be a "big market in
seven to ten years".

Doesn't sound like the 432 was a resounding success from Intel's standpoint.
