[comp.sys.intel] Need some help with a 310.

Please mail all replies to cornhead@sutro.sfsu.edu:

I am a student trying to learn Unix and C on a 286/10 based 310.
There are a few bugs in my system I am trying to work out and a
few improvements I would like to make so I can install a wider
range of PD software with less trouble.

Here's what I have:

Xenix 286 R3.4 update 1
Version 1.15 of (Microsoft?) C
544A Firmware: 2.3
215g Firmware: 2.5
1 meg of 012CX ram

If anyone sees this as generally a deadly combination, let me know.
I can't see throwing any money at this system, but if someone
convinces me that some upgrade or another will bring me as from
night to day, I might try to get it together.

I have a few specific questions I hope someone can answer:

1) How can I jumper my 544A board for the top meg of memory? Right
now, my board is at 0nE0000. It is "found" on boot at 0FE0000 but
corrupts user memory near 00E0000 because it sits at 16 places in
memory. I want it at 0FE0000. Add 72-73 and then...?

2) Can a 012CX board be upgraded to hold 2 megs? It seems to me
it should work fine. A few PAL's at worst. How complicated?

3) Modem dialout lines aren't handled well. Kermit warns
about not being able to hang up the phone, and won't do hayes
dialing. Kermit and especially cu sometimes hang unkillably,
especially on disconnect. Anyone know any fixes? Maybe I need V2.5
of the 544A firmware. But I think there is more to it.

4) It is hard to get many things to compile into something working.
Pcomm, for example. What is the current version of the C compiler,
and do you think I should upgrade? The docs say to use Huge model
with caution. Sounds broken to me.

Anyone with any comments or advice (including "Get a new computer!",
maybe I just need to hear that enough until it starts to sink in) please mail
me. I'll summarize and post anything that might be of interest.

Thanks.
