[comp.sys.intel] Old Intel 386 OEM pre-Production motherboard

stretch@EMUNIX.EMICH.EDU (Brian Stretch) (08/02/90)

I have an Intel 386 OEM pre-production motherboard and accompanying 2 meg
32-bit RAM card which I accquired from a guy locally. I didn't know the MB
was pre-production at the time (okay, the v.99B BIOS should have been a
hint..), but anyhow, I'm stuck with it now, and it has a problem. The board
refuses to run in 80386 protected mode. CheckIt v2.1 crashes when it tries
to test protected mode (the 80386 registers checked out okay), and Windows
3.0 refuses to attempt to run..

I have called at least a dozen different Intel phone numbers in various
states, and the last word I received (from the Michigan Intel sales office
in West Bloomfield) is that I need to trace the paperwork for this board.
That is, figure out who the hell let it get out to the general public, and
then MAYBE they'll consider helping me. The guy I got it from (used to)
deal in lots of used hardware, and doesn't remember where the mb is from..
he's supposably searching for the info. Why the paperwork is so important
is beyond me (other than to know who to castrate..), as there is no question
as to who BUILT it..

If anyone can help me in a) fixing this board, so that it works in protected
mode and perhaps gets a newer BIOS, or b) finding an upgrade path.. if I had
to pay a small sum to get it exchanged for a working board, so be it..
please let me know. Otherwise, I'm out of luck.. perhaps this is my
punishment for straying from Motorola architecture.

The numbers:
Motherboard: SBC 386 AT S, PBA 137406-001, 8010-12723-01,
             BIOS v.99b (October.. 6th? 1986)
             T072 handwritten in ink..
RAM card: SSBC 386MEM020, SNW86366, PBA 149385-001. (c) Intel 86.
Sounds identical to a board mentioned earlier on this
          conference.. anyone wanna buy?

Thanks for any help.. from an extreamly frustrated,
