Assemblers: The PseudoSam Level I assembler from PseudoCorp is free and available from many BBS systems. Nothing fancy, but it works quite well. They are hoping you will like it and buy one of the fancier versions with macros, etc. I believe they make assemblers for various micros, the only one I have used is for the 8051. Compilers: Dave Dunfield's Micro-C is an OUTSTANDING product. For $35 you can get a compiler and assembler for the 8086, 8085, 6809, 68HC11, and 8051 (all of them, not just one). The compiler generated code is neither as fast nor compact as some of the commercial compilers, but you can't beat the price. An extract of Dave's "catalog" is attached. A couple of years ago there was a 8051 compiler and assembler for a language called `Poker' on a ftp-able host on purdue; I guess it was arthur.cs.purdue (or merlin?). I think it was designed for programming arrays of 8051 equipped with a math coprocessor. The languages somewhat resembled a mixture of Pascal and BASIC. The code actually was written very cleanly, so it might get you started. However, looking through my ftp archive lists, it seems to be gone from purdue. Then, there was a 8051 assembler posted on comp.sources.misc/volume.10. I've had good luck with a shareware cross-assembler called TASM. I don't recall who wrote it, but it's available on the SIMTEL archive (last time I checked). I also have a copy of the Franklin C compiler and macro-assembler. It's *not* free/cheap (~$1000)... but it's completely ANSI compatible, write's very tight code and has excellent support and documentation. I highly recommend it ! I have found that an excellent source of assemblers, monitors, and demo
code for the 80c51 is on the Signetics BBS. The microcontroller section
of the board has a good selection of 8051 related files.
