I'm currently running 2.1.3 and trying to figure out if I should upgrade to 2.2 or switch over to MicroPort ... Does 2.2 come with better support for laser printers (ditroff ?) Has any one out there converted from 2.1.? to 2.2 yet ? Are there any advantages of doing do yet ? (I understand that sdb is not yet available) Thanks... -- Name....: Tan Bronson Company.: Microvation Consultants US Mail.: 20 Sperry Rd Madison, CT 06443 (20)-421-5061 UUCP....: ...{decvax!genrad!teddy,seismo!yale}!bronson!tan

No ditroff. Two major bonuses with 2.2:
1) shl (yeah!!!)
2) non-standard disk support. You can spec # cyl, # head, # sec, etc.
You also get 8 bit data path on serial lines. I don't know what it's
good for, but make sure you put CS8 and ISTRIP in /etc/gettydefs if you
expect uucp to work. They forgot to document this.

Imagen is supported, but not LaserWriter. But then Microport doesn't support
PostScript either. Third party software is available for Postscript, just
be sure to ask for the 386 version :-)

Yes.

2.2 supports more devices, and the new kernel supports sdb. Yes, sdb.
I heven't used it for very much since the last rash of sdb suitable hacking
was over shortly before I got sdb.
2.2 also provides direct CRT access, allowing graphics et al.
Of course you really want the 386 toolkit 2.0 version. Like, if the Lord
had intended us to use 64k segments, he would made it cubist or something.
Rnews, rn, compress, and emacs are all running as 386 small model.

We are in the process of converting to SCO XENIX 2.2 from 2.1.3. Here are a few comments. We have been able to run all of our 2.1.3 executables without problems under 2.2. Section 3.6 in the system release notes for 2.2 is on ULIMIT and says quote "The default ULIMIT has been raised for XENIX 2.2. It is now 2,097,152 block (1 gigabyte)". That should help! 2.2 allows you to have up to 60 open files per process (very nice used to be 20). In addition we were able to get large memory model versions of things like adb, which has been a great help.
