[comp.unix.xenix] Help, New XENIX User searching for Software & Sources

jrl0543@ritisis.UUCP (Luce.wbst129@Xerox.COM) (06/16/87)

Dear fellow Xenix Users,

	Help,

I have recently obtained a PCs Limited 286 based computer
(AT Clone) and SCO Xenix V rev 2.1.3, as well as an EGA Monitor.
Now I need to know where to obtain software that REALLY runs
under this (SCO Xenix V rev 2.1.3) OS.

As I just spent several thousand dollars, I cannot afford
to buy too many (Any, at this point) commercial packages, so I am
looking for either PD (preferred) or Shareware, or other sources.
Note further that currently I have no other high level language
compiler besides 'C', ( I have the development environment) although I
	also have Xlisp 1.6 running.
I do have ARC available for unarcing of files.

I am looking specifically for the following:

An Xmodem File Transfer program that works under cu,
or as a stand alone. In fact any good file transfer
or communication program besides Kermit.

SNOBOL [or spitbol] (Does anyone still use this?)
(I REALLY am interested in obtaining this.)

Larn (Why not?)

Better get a good fan if you intend to run 24 hours-PC's limited have heat
problems.

I have umodem: Not much help under cu-but suitable for uploads.

Hack is a standard part of the V.2.2 release.

What's wrong with curses?

I have microemacs 3.8i running well-Version 3.8L is now available

Standard part of V.2.2 release.

I have a patched netnews-SCO passed SVID and doesn't have a real LOCKF
call-a few bugs, and I haven't tried it full scale due to a horrible
disk space crunch.

The new release has a larger set of utilities
(cut paste, and the like) I have a whole bunch of minor-league utilities
in usr/local (like dir, a one liner: lf) to ease my transitions between
Xenix, and dos.... There is better support for EGA-as I can't afford
EGA I can't tell you about it. I'm told that SCO Professional supports
EGA graphics now....

So am I-but I haven't seen anything yet that does what I want, save empire
, and that, most emphatically, won't compile.

All this stuff (save for SCO V.2.2) is available from:

1-(609)391-0037 login: ubbs
I will validate you, and give you uucp access at that time.

And that, my friends, is reason enough to upgrade to a 386 system ;-).

Or a Tandy 6000 :-) Ours has empire, rn and all the other goodies. Most
compile first pass with little modification past adjusting variable names to
be unique in 8 characters.
