[comp.unix.xenix] Determining SCO Xenix Sys V Development System Versions?

jrl0543@ritisis.UUCP (Luce.wbst129@Xerox.COM) (08/04/87)

A friend of mine with whom I have been corresponding through E-mail
has the same OS as I do, namely SCO Xenix Sys V Rev 2.1.3 update E.
He is considering purchasing an upgrade to both the OS, and the
Development system. Now the OS update is no problem, for him,
except for the money :-), as the system comes up and tells you
SCO Xenix System V 2.1.3, when you boot.

However, the question on the Development environment he has is:
	1)	What development Environment Version does he have.
	2)	Are there seperate Versions for 8086 & 80286?
(I assume he used to run this on an XT or something similar,)
(or he wouldn't be wondering about this or the other questions)
	3)	How can he tell if he has one or the other, or even the version.
	4)	If there are different versions, could he be running the 8086
version on his 80286 (AT Clone?).
	5)	What will the update to 2.2.1 do to (or for) him if he doesn't
		know what version he has?
	6)	Any advice or suggestions as to how to discover what Development
System he is running with would be greatly appreciated.

I looked over my documentation, and noted that the only place differences
were noted was in the release notes where it referred to Xenix - 86, and
Xenix - 286. But on my copy, they are both on the Release notes. Also
in the section talking about the compiler (cc) it mentions that it can
generate either type of code (8086 or 80286) no where in my docs does
it say how to determine differences, if indeed there are any. The only
other note I could find was the Large and Huge Models for compiling, and the
-LARGE passes of the compiler, which are for 286 versions only.

If you can offer advice, (besides calling SCO's service #, as he said
he doesn't want to appear too foolish), he would greatly appreciate it.

I would like to thank the net for its last response to a question from
me concerning "Help - New user needs software", and hope you can
be has helpful this time.

If you Would send responses to me, I will forward them to Tom, my friend
so we can continue to exchange software between our 2 machines.

Again, thanks for any help you can offer.

				John
