[comp.unix.xenix] Looking for help with reseting EGA from Microport System V Unix

rickers@drexel.Drexel.edu (Rick Wargo) (08/28/87)

Hello -

First a bit of background. Having recently purchased (6 months)
Microport System V and trying to run it and Unify's Accell on our IBM AT,
we have run into serious speed problems. Quick solution - purchase Intel's
Inboard 386/AT with 1 megabyte of memory (upping the amount of memory to
4.5 Meg). But, alas, no quick answer. It seems that the Inboard defaults
to 8 megahertz and the only way to get it to run at 16 MHz is thru software
(now, c'mon Intel, why not something a bit easier? (purple->8-). Okay, but
Intel only has a utility to do this for DOS. Hmmm.... This board was also
purchased about six months ago. The other day, I called Intel (again),
this time to find out that they have recently made available a driver for
Microport System V to up the speed thru software (similar to that under
DOS, where you hit Ctrl-Shift-Alt [1-4] corresponding to speed [1-4] for
DOS.

Okay, just got the driver today (thanks Intel for the speedy
response) and realized that the speed improvement does not seem to be that
wonderful when running Accell. This is partly do to a slow disk (Priam 60
meg external). But the speed is selectable by running a program called in-
board (what else? 8-) and passing an argument 1 thru 4. But this still
does not fix the other problem that the inboard creates - no colors!

Apology for such a long introductory... Now to the point... I
need a routine to reset the EGA board from Unix. I was told by Intel that
this is all that is needed to get my colors back. So, my question is -
How? I am not that familiar with programming the IBM, so any help would be
greatly appreciated!! Please e-mail replies.

						  Thanks in advance -
