[comp.unix.xenix] UNIX on a Toshiba 3100?

rusk@utradio.UUCP (08/26/87)

Has anyone had experience running SCO XENIX SYSTEM V or
Microport's UNIX V/AT on the Toshiba 3100? Is it practical or
even possible to run UNIX on the Toshiba 3100?

The 3100 is an 80286 based machine. A major compatibility problem
might be the 3.5" floppy drive (720k IBM PC Convertible
compatible). I could borrow an external 5.25" DS/DD floppy drive
for the initial installation. (No external 1.2 MByte drive is
available for the 3100.) However, I would still need the internal
3.5" drive to back up ASCII files and DOS binaries.

The internal hard-disk could be upgraded from 10 MBytes to a
faster 20 MByte disk, and the memory from 640k to 2.8 MBytes.
Both are expensive modifications so I would like to start with
640k RAM and my present 10 MByte hard-disk, and purchase upgrades
later as I could afford them.

The 3100 supports CGA graphics. There is also an enhanced
graphics mode (B/W with 640x400 pixel resolution) very similar to
that of the AT&T 6300. It would be hoping for too much that
enhanced graphics would be supported by products like SCO's
Multiview windowing interface, I suppose.

I also need a product like DOSMERGE so that I can access
my existing DOS software. Does this present additional
compatibility problems? For those with experience using DOSMERGE,
how much memory is available for a DOS application running under
UNIX on 640k or 2.8 MByte systems? What are the limitations on DOS
applications? Would programs that access the communication ports,
graphics hardware (especially programs using the 640x400 enhanced
resolution mode), etc. run? Could an application under DOSMERGE
access the 3.5" drive even if UNIX applications could not?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

We sell both the Toshiba laptops as well as being the Canadian SCO
distributor. We have been given to believe that Xenix for the T3100/20 will
be available in the near future. Because of time constraints, we haven't
even tried to bring it up here.

SCO advised us that changes are required, but I don't have the list - the
analyst who discussed this with SCO is on vacation. When we get more info or
get it working, we'll report it thru. (We'll also be looking at an XT Xenix
version for the T1200 as well - battery powered 11lbs of UNIX ;-} )
