[comp.unix.xenix] Summary of Microport SysV/AT Info

olsen@XN.LL.MIT.EDU (Jim Olsen) (09/18/87)

Here's a summary of the Microport System V/AT info I recently requested.
Thanks to Karl Denninger, Andrew Ginter, Michael Grenier, Burt Janz, Jay
Maynard, Len Mills, and Brad Transue for responding.

> 1. Where would you buy it?

Five of the seven respondents heartily recommend the Programmer's
Connection, 136 Sunnyside St., Hartville, OH 44632, tel. 800-336-1166.

Karl Denninger recommends his own company, Macro Computer Solutions,
tel. (voice) 312-566-8910, (modem) 312-566-8909.

> 2. What minimum hardware would you recommend for a mostly single-user system?

The consensus is that at least 2-2.5 Mbyte of RAM and 30-40 Mbyte of disk
is required for good operation. More is better. Karl Denninger suggests
that the disk should be voice-coil, not stepper-motor actuated.

> 3. Does DOSMerge work well?

No. The current beta version is buggy. The released version, supposedly
available in a couple of weeks, may be better. One should probably wait
for the released version of DOSMerge, along with version 2.3 of SysV/AT.

I second Karl's recomendation. I have been using a 28ms STEPPER HD and was
pleased with the response. I just upgraded to a CDC WREN 80Mb Voice Coil HD
and am amazed at the improvement! Almost as noticable as going from 1MB to 2MB
RAM!

    Must be talking about 0.3...

I have version 1.30 and it is a vast improvement over 0.3! It is based
on the 2.3 kernel (which in itself fixes many things) and is rock solid.
The only complaint I have is that it doesn't gracefully handle my Hercules
monitor: Reflex puts it into graphics mode; switching virtual consoles puts it
back into text mode. It will be fixed, though... :-)

2.3 is good, but there are still a few rough edges. BUT, these rough edges
are just nits, not show stoppers like there were in 1.36, 2.0, 2.2.0, etc.
