[comp.unix.xenix] Second Hard Disk on Xenix

I need help!!

I'm trying to add a second hard disk (ST4096) to a Sperry IT
running Xenix. The disk works, because if I swap out the
primary disk, I can load Xenix onto the new disk.

I've got the old disk plugged into the first port of the
controller and the drive select jumper on 1. The old disk
has got the terminator removed and sits in the middle of the
wide ribbon cable.

The second disk has the terminator installed, drive select 2,
and sits on the end of the wide ribbon cable.

The CMOS table is initialized for two disk drives.

             Controller First Second
               +--+ Disk Disk
Wide cable | |[----------+-----------+
Narrow cable | |{-------+--|--+ +--+--|--+
Narrow cable | |{---+ | | | | |
               | | | +-----+ | +-----+
               | | | |
               +--+ +------------+

When I start up the machine, it goes through the ROM based diagnostics
fine, but then when it tries to boot off the primary hard drive,
it times out with "boot0: error 04".

I've contacted SCO (don't know what error 04 is), Western Digital (should
work!), and the vendor who sold it (no help!).

Has anyone had this problem? Have you fixed it? I've tried a lot
of "alternate" plans, so if you've got an "untested" theory, I'm
game to try it. Any help would be appreciated.
