I operate a "semi-public" XENIX system at Allegheny College; the hardware consists of a Tandy 6000 with 1MB RAM/2 Quantum 2080 (125MB total)/10MB Bernouilli catridge drive/2 Paradyne FDX 2400 modems. The system provides an anonymous uucp access to the mod.sources/comp.sources.unix archive (814 333 6728 1200/2400 login: pdsrc ; copy /usr/spool/pdsrc/all.subjects to your system). I run UNaXcess 1.00.02 for a BBS system. The main consideration I would put into the discussion is the necessity of buying good hardware. The system will rapidly become a nightmare if you are constantly dumping files from dying hard drives to your backup medium and your user base will wander away if your system is up and down like a yo-yo (as will your wife..). I have had fairly good luck with the 6000 considering that all my drives have been surplus units. I may be wrong, but it seems to me that the XENIX/UNIX BBS systems that arem "making it" are those that are turning into general information systems. There do not seem to be as many budding UNIX users out there, but there are a lot of people interested in netnews information and software.
