[comp.unix.xenix] XT hard drive & controller on AT motherboard

butler@stsci.EDU (Lee A. Butler) (10/29/87)

I am looking at upgrading my XT with a replacement AT motherboard (AT
functionality, XT form-factor). I am anxious to know if I can use my
current hard-disk and hard-disk controller with this new motherboard.
Is it possible to use an XT (Western Digital) hard-disk controller in a
PC/AT?

While I'm at it, has anyone else upgraded their XT to an AT with one of
these motherboards?

If your drive type has been selected using the jumper plugs on the WD
controller card, then you can just throw the sucker in an AT. If you
are using the Auto-Configure mode of the WD controller then NO WAY!

You tell the AT that the hard disk type for your drive is 0 so that
it allows the WD Controller and Bios to take care of things for you.

If you do this, make sure you get a full disk backup first. If you
cream things then at least you have something to fall back on.

I ran a WD Controller with a ST225 Drive for a while whilst waiting
for the real AT controller to come in. I also used the XT floppy
disk card. I wound up getting an AT controller because the XT card
is only designed for the 8bit bus whereas the AT card has the extra
nipple on it for the 16bit bus. The change in speed was noticiable
with the CORE disk speed test.

I was only able to get DOS to function on a machine with this configuration
though. I think the *nix guys don't include any type of device support for
an XT controller in an AT configuration.

Not so. I was able to run uport on my AT clone (an IMS-286) using
an XT controller and a seagate ST-225. I still use this rather
slow configuration when I have disk crashes and am waiting for
my AT drive(s) to be repaired.

Microport has a very flexible configuration scheme. With 2.3,
you should be able to accomodate most any drive.
