Really folks, this is all very counterproductive. Manufacturers throwing rocks at each other on the net will not get us anywhere. Maybe this just points out that comp.unix.uport or whatever should be started RIGHT AWAY! If you guys can't keep from flaming each other at the mere mention of the competition, we should split you up. Both systems have their respective merits. As an independent software developer I chose waiting for a copy of uPort to be delivered over an off-the-shelf Xenix at a local store. I had my reasons, the main being portability, and I will stand by my choice. I am glad that Microport chooses to stand by it's product, and I don't think they should be taken to task for that (as a user I'm delighted). If I remember the sordid details of this discussion, all this started over a silly signature. I respect the right of Xenix users (and sellers) to say that their priorities made them choose Xenix, and that they are satisfied. But that is not an excuse to start the whole "My OS is better than your OS" thing. By now we should have learned that this is a very subjective decision (religion :-). As for impressions of the two: -Xenix seems to less prone to crash -The Xenix compiler is faster and better. -The Microport kernel is faster, and they support bigger caches (286). -Administration on Microport is easier becuse it is real SVR2, and has a SysV toolset and system layout, which has been better documented in third party literature, and PD software. -Xenix documentation is clearer out of the box. -Microport is less expensive. If you want *my* reasons for choosing uPort, I can tell you. But they apply to my situation. If you are going to make a choice, I would suggest getting the facts, and not listening to the emotional diatribe posted recently. -- Dragos Ruiu Disclaimer: My opinons are my employer's, I'm unemployed!
