[comp.unix.xenix] compress and binary files?

samperi@dasys1.UUCP (Dominick Samperi) (12/28/87)

I've been using compress for Microport's System V/AT for quite some time
without any problems, but today I learned that it can fail when an attempt is
made to compress a cpio (or tar) archive that contains a binary file. I tried
to compress a cpio archive that contained a core file near the end, and
everything was fine until the core file was encountered, at which point there
was a memory fault at the statement containing the expression
htabof(i) = fcode. Is it illegal to use compress on binary files, or are there
any similar restrictions? If not, does anybody know how to fix this problem?
Thanks.
