IBM Xenix stty 1200 </dev/tty00 hangs, answer is...

A while back we sent out mail asking for suggestions as to
why our PC-AT running IBM Xenix 2.0 hung up every time we
tried to configure /dev/tty00 with an stty command.

We would like to thank all of you who took the time to reply,
your help was invaluable.

The answer appears to be that COM1 (and most likely COM2, if the
mail we received was correct) are configured as modem ports when
used by XENIX. This means that in order for the port to be accessed
the carrier detect line into the port (pin 1) must be high.

Since we had no connection to that pin carrier detect was
always low and the stty was hanging when it tried to access the
port.

We got around this problem by jumpering data terminal ready (pin 4)
into pin 1. This may not have been the most elegant solution but
it got us moving ahead again.

Once again, thanks to everyone who took the time to help us out.

have a nice day,
