[comp.unix.xenix] BEL stopped working on SCO Xenix

haugj@pigs.UUCP (The Beach Bum) (06/15/88)

i have noticed an intermittent problem with my machine and the BELL character
recently. the bell doesn't ring in vi, even with errorbells set, it doesn't
ring if I type a bell - BUT - it may ring if I cat a file with a BELL character
in it. some bells seem to work and others don't ...

the speaker is Just Fine(tm), as determined by running a file through the
speaker device driver. i am at a total loss as to what is going on here ...

- john.

What happens to me is the bell will stop working if it was ringing as I was
switching multiscreens. [I know it sounds impossible, but I've done it more
times than I can remember.] For example, if I'm running kermit and I connect
just as I go to check on something else, it will stop beeping after that.
Usually, I have to wait until rebooting before getting it back. Other times,
it mysteriously returns.
