[comp.unix.xenix] PD Database for Xenix

rcj@killer.DALLAS.TX.US (Robert Johnson) (08/09/88)

I am in need of a good PD (or cheap comercial) database program to
run under Xenix on an Altos 2086 (binary compatible with Microsoft's
Xenix 286). It needs to be something like DBase II or III with a
built in language to program aplications. It also needs to be able to
access large amounts of information (Please, no DB's that can only handle
<100 records!).

Please respond, since I need this program rather badly (it's either this,
or buy a new PC and run DBase III and spends bundles of cash....)

         Thanks,
             Robert

I cheap database with built in programming language? Not likely.

At least I can't think of one. But is you want something like dBASE on
XENIX, you should consider FOXBASE. Very fast, and completely
compatible. (FoxBase PLUS , that is)

Unfortunately not cheap, and on a 286 machine math coproocessor
strongly recomended.

For this one, I suggest you try Soft Warehouse in Dallas. They have a
1-800 number. They were advertising FoxBase + for about $300 (if my
memory serves me correctly). They are usually the cheapest place around
to buy stuff like that... at least thats been my experience.

I'm surprised to see the question for a Database like DBase III under the
comp.xenix group. Hasn't everybody heard of Foxbase+? It doesn't have all
the development tools (forms, screen, catalog) as dbase in the xenix version
but it runs all the code you can hand it from any old dbase program.

I'm using DOS Foxbase+ under VP/ix for initial development (screen paint etc)
and then I just copy the result to my xenix directory using their handy little
dos/xenix conversion copy and I have xenix foxbase programs.

I can't do all the nice color and some other things under Xenix but for quick
and dirty 'get-the-job-done' type stuff it's just great. Fast too.

Foxbase+ 386 is available any day soon now. In the meantime the 286 version
humms along. For the record for those who are into this, the Xenix Foxbase is
about 2 generations behind the dos version. Neither SCO nor Fox promise much
further development on the multi-user side. I think SCO will be pushing its
own Integra SQL type database in the future. Just conjecture though.
