I'm in the process of writing a bull semen inventory program (really! I'm not joking! I work on a farm!) and I'm very seriously contemplating writing it with Oracle on Xenix/386. I pretty much know what I want, but I'd like to know if any of you xenix gurus have had any bad experiences with anything of the things that I want to do. I'm planning on running my applications on a Dell system 310 with a 90 meg disk drive and 2 megs of memory. Because I'm only planning on running 2 terminals to start, I'm hoping that 2 megs will be enough. Am I kidding myself here? The machine will supposedly support up to 16 meg on the motherboard, but with memory prices being what they are, I was hoping to cut my memory requirements to a minimum, at least for now. Has anybody had problems with a Dell 310 running Xenix/386? Dell seems to be a very reputable company and I'm sure that they will stand behind their product. I'm particularly interested in their optional on-sight service contract as I am located ~1500 miles from where application will be running. Any comments? How well does Oracle perform under Xenix? I've never used Oracle in my life, but all the reviews I've read seem to say that Oracle is the hottest database management system around. It sure looks like an interesting package, but do any seasoned veterans have any comments about it? Has anyone had any experience with Emerald tape backup systems under Xenix? They seem to be a solid company, but I've been deceived before.... Any comments would be greatly appreciated. As usual, please send e-mail and I will post a summary if I feel it's noteworthy. ----- * The opinions expressed here are John Fruetel * * my own, etc., etc., etc..
