I just got the latest SCO Xenix and VP/ix, and I'm running a Zenith Z-386 with a flat tension monitor, just like Jerry Pournelle seems to be running. Perhaps there's something to what he says; I haven't been able to invoke VP/ix without having the screen go bonkers to save my life. The symtoms are: type vpix, and the screen displays snow. If I turn the monitor off and then on, I see that the snow is actually 40 character mode text, but is still not legible or useful. I'm still able to switch to other virtual consoles and kill off the culprit process, however, and then all is well. I looked at the vpix config file, and commented out the EGA ROM line, but that made things worse - the snow was more intense, and I couldn't safely switch to other consoles. Perhaps I made an installation mistake (maybe JP did too?)? If anyone is running the same hardware combo with VP/ix successfully, please let me know how you did it! I'd be eternally grateful.
