[comp.unix.xenix] sco xenix troff: dumb questions

kinmonthprep@deneb.ucdavis.edu (Earl H. Kinmonth) (12/02/88)

(1)
Is all the "Imagen" stuff that comes with SCO Xenix useful
for anything? I've asked around the University and have
found only one person of even claims to have heard of the
company (okay, so it is an agricultural school). I haven't
been able to find anything that looks like it might use
Imagen output although we've got a veritable wharehouse of
different laser printers on campus.

(2)
Why does SCO supply an ancient version of troff with
drivers for great devices like model 33 teletypes? Is this
because they make more money on their Lyrix word processor?

Works fine on an Imagen printer. I don't recall any other proprietary
format being portable, either.

I believe that the version of troff supplied is the latest. You have
perhaps confused this with 'ditroff' which is a diferrent product with
similar function. They supply it because it is what they have as a
licensed product.

For about the same money you can get eroff from Elan and have a product
which goes to your LaserJet printers. I don't know about Postscript, but
someone will indoubtedly post an answer ;-)

My biggest complaint about the nroff is that when you order 386
"complete Xenix" you get the nroff compiled for the 8086. Needless to
say performance is really bad. I was very unhappy with my version for
speed, although it does what I want eventually. I use troff as my idle
daemon for anything big, set the nice to 19 and let it crawl in the
background.

And does anyone have a TROFF driver for an HP Laserjet? This is for SCO 2.2.1

It was posted to comp.sources.misc a while back, it's called JetRoff. I
have not used it with Xenix but can't think of any reason why it would not
work. It's shareware and is a postprocessor troff->HP LJ. If you lack troff
itself then take a look ar Elan. The troff you got with Xenix will work
OK but you lack a couple of the DWB 2.0 tools, pic and grap as I recall.

The problem is that SCO's troff is the old troff and not the device
independant ditroff. Old troff is hardwired for C/A/T typesetter output.
This makes it difficult to implement other devices. Some companies have
done this. I've used QMS's qtroff, and Imagen has itroff.

For those of us stuck with old troff, I see three alternatives:

(1) Get a translator program. For example, SSC sells a "cat2dit" program
for $295 ($495 for source). Once there, you can use something like
"jetroff". I haven't done any of this, so no guarantees.

(2) Junk it and buy the troff package from somebody like Elan.

(3) Stick with nroff.

I've been using the third alternative. I've hacked together some
driver tables for the LJ, and this has been good enough for most of the
things I do. If anybody is interested in my "tablj.c" nroff driver,
you are welcome to a copy.

Yes!

Elan Computer Group, Inc. sells a package called EROFF which is the AT&T
Documenter's WorkBench (DWB), including device independent troff,
nroff, tbl, eqn, pic, grap, macros, etc., plus bug fixes and
enhancements including bitmap graphics inclusion, printer code (including
PostScript) inclusion, and drivers for the HP LaserJet line of printers
and PostScript printers (an Imagen driver is also available). Automatic
HP Soft Font downloading is done for the LaserJets. Downloadable Adobe
PostScript fonts may also be used.

DWB and the printer drivers are also available separately. All of this is
available on dozens of different UNIX machines and under MS-DOS.

There is also a $99 nroff-only package available for MS-DOS.

Our soft copy screen previewer EVIEW is available for Suns under SunView,
many systems under X-Windows V10.R4, and support for X11 is in progress.
All of DWB 2.0 and EROFF's enhancements are supported by EVIEW.

Greg Sassenrath recently posted 'cat2dit' to comp.text (11/16/88).
I haven't tried it, but I did snag a copy. I would be interested
in knowing how well it works, with JetRoff as the postprocessor.

>(2) Junk it and buy the troff package from somebody like Elan.

Urban Applied Science in Newark, NJ sells DWB 2.0 for Xenix, I think,
and the price is in the $200-$300 range. The number is (201) 242-7230
and (800) 872-8763. John Roseman at UAS has told me that he has
used JetRoff as the postprocessor with good success. So add another
$50-$100 for JetRoff and you've got a complete DWB package for lots
less than what Elan charges.

>(3) Stick with nroff.

Blecch!

There was a cat2dit program posted to the net a while back.

In addition, there is a quite comprehensive otrff->LJ program which also
was posted to the net during the past few months.

Check with your nearest archive site.

Here's a fourth alternative: SoftQuad Publishing software.
This is troff and all the preprocessors rewritten and it is
available for Xenix with a number of different output drivers.

I've been using it for a year and a half for some demanding
work and have found it to be very, very good.
