[net.unix-wizards] tar for V6 system

jnc@MIT-CSR.ARPA (08/13/84)

Does anyone out there have TAR for a PDP V6 (shudder) system?
I guess a V7 one would do if nothing else is available, but if it
uses 'awk' I'd have to hot-wire it not to need it. I'm really desperate;
any help appreciated.

The original PDP11 V7 release tapes had a V6 tar included as
a file conversion aid ... note that it was the only reasonable
way to move files up from v6 to v7 ... the filesystems were
incompatable and tp died a rightful death.

As a side question how many V6 and V5 systems are still out there?

Our PDP-11's run a very enhanced version 6. By the time V7 got out
of Bell, we had hacked our V6 so bad, that we couldn't give up any
of the features we added. We put in most of the necessary V7 features
such as execs with environments, and you can mount either version 6 or
version 7 disk packs.

I hate to to admit this, but yes I do...unfortunately, my attempt
to mail it to you (jnc@MIT-CSR) bombed...so if you or anybody else are
interested, please contact me at the address below, or at rsk@purdue.arpa.

Well, I ran V6 just last week, trying to recover some ancient but
precious data files. The circa 1980 disks still spun, but with lots of
bad blocks which I didn't remember having before :-).

I finally had to recover the files from even more ancient ROLLOUT tapes.
Fortunately, I had a program from V6 to V7 conversion days which can
peruse a V6 filesystem image and interactively extract files and
directory trees. The V6 file system may be either on a physical disk,
or else loaded into a normal Unix file. The program runs on either V7
or 4BSD, and anyone who might face similar data recovery problems is
welcome to a copy.
