[comp.unix.xenix] bernoulli boxes

root@mjbtn.MFEE.TN.US (Mark J. Bailey) (01/06/89)

Hello,

I have a two 10 megabyte bernoulli box (over-under) that I bought through
Tandy. I have had it sitting off of my old Tandy 6000 for many years. In
the past month or so, my Tandy has acquired some sort of terminal illness
that recurs every other day.

I also have a Tandy 4000 (386/16 mHz). I am wanting to hang my 10 meg
bernoulli drives on it under SCO Xenix 2.3.1. SCO is supposed to have
drivers to support the unit. However, a friend of mine told me today that
the 386 bus is too fast for the bernoulli drive controller that would
work on the 386. He said it ran great for him on a 286. But the 386
just crashed with the drives.

What I would like to know is if anyone out there has any experience
with hanging bernoulli drives (Tandy styled or not) on a 386, what
controller card did you use, and has anyone done this under SCO Xenix
2.3.1 (386)????? Is there some things that you have to do special to
get it to work?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I hate to lose the usefulness
on my drives, but there may be no choice. Please email responses and
I will repost a summary if warranted.

Thank you in advance,

Mark.

sco claims there are drivers available for iomega bernoulli boxes with the
PC3B/50 controller. there is an alias in the linkkit's master file where
it is referenced as "om".
unfortunately, there is no driver, only a stub.
i've seen this on xenix 286 (v. 2.2.1). if anybody knows where to get hold of
a working driver, please POST.

so long,

IOMEGA runs a BBS that has updated drivers for their products and also has
a lot of info on specific products, i.e how to make a bernoulli model xxx
work pc brand xxx. There is a lot of good information available in
the BBS files.

I don't have the BBS number anymore, but I have used the BBS to download
a new driver for a bernoulli box I used in my previous job, so I can assure
you that as of about 9 months ago there certainly was a BBS. I got the BBS
number by called the IOMEGA number listed in the manual for the bernoulli box.

Mark, I have been using the 10 Meg B-Box on a Tandy 4000 running
Xenix 2.2.4 for a couple of months now with no problems (once I
got the switch and jumper settings correct). I use it primarily
as a mountable file system both for incremental file backups and
development work.

I am using the Tandy supplied dcd interface board, but they have
dropped this from the catalog. The same board is available from
Iomega. You need to get Tandy's Device Drivers (catalog number
700-1502) to support the B-Box.

These drivers use the same interrupt level for the cartridge as
the second parallel printer port. DO NOT USE THEIR OPTION TO
REMOVE THE PRINTER DRIVERS!!! This doesn't just remove the
second printer driver support, but all parallel printer drivers
are dropped from the kernel.

I have been very happy with the flexibility I have with the
Bernoulli Box, both on my old Tandy 6000 and the current Tandy
4000. You might also consider getting an a-b switch so you can
use it with both systems.

Bill.
