Our local MIS head wants to "upgrade" our Vax-780 to a 785. As he's from IBM-land he believes in the upgrade option (it's the IBM way, DEC's counting on the MIS heads I suspect to sell 785's). So he wants to do it, whether we want it or not. So the question is, does Berkeley 4.2 UNIX run on a 785, i.e. does anyone have it running? I heard rumors someone on the net had one. Does it break anything? If so how bad? If not, what do you get out of it? I suspect not much, especially at the price (which is either 60K discounted from 75K, or 100K solid, with a 10 month lead time) but like I said, we maybe forced into it no matter what. Like they say, Thanks in advance. -- Address: William P. Malloy, ITT Telecom, B & CC Engineering Group, Raleigh NC {ihnp4!mcnc, burl, ncsu, decvax!ittvax}!ittral!malloy

At the official DEC announcement of the 785, someone asked the salesman how compatible the 785 was with the 780. He replied that it was "bug-for-bug compatible".

From: Doug Kingston <dpk@BRL-TGR.ARPA> 4.2 WILL run on a 785 but only with the fixes for the 64K memory controller (the new memory controller). Your local 4.2BSD system hacker should be able to obtain these fixes. They are widely available. -Doug-

Could someone supply the details of the changes needed for the 64K memory controller to make 4.2 run with a 785? We are running stock 4.2 and I believe at least one of our 780's has the new controller. Is this a 785 specific problem? Kevin Kahn ...!ogcvax!inteloa!kck

Okay --- so now I'm putting in a formal request: can anybody mail me the 4.2BSD hacks for the memory controller for a 785? Many thanks.... -- ...ihnp4!tellab1!steve Steve Harpster Tellabs, Inc.
