[comp.unix.xenix] VPIX Problems/Questions...

jeffh@hplsla.HP.COM (Jeff Harrell) (01/04/89)

I'm working with vpix and have come across a a few problems:

               1) How do you install a different version of dos?
It may be documented but I can't find it.

               2) When I use any graphics programs in vpix the
CRT is full of junk (mostly lines) when I exit
vpix. I'm using a vga card running xenix 2.3.1
and vpix 1.1? (not the controlled release).

               3) A desktop publishing package I'm using (pfs-first Publisher)
works just fine in dos. In vpix I get garbage when
                  I print the graphics.

Anyone out there had the same problems? Are there any work arounds to
items 2 & 3?

thanks,

Jeff (spectra software) Harrell

You don't. The version of dos which comes with vpix has been
modified to work with vpix. Another version of dos will work, but it is
not supported.

It sounds like you are not resetting the graphics mode. I can't
help beyond that since I don't use graphics here.

I no that! I didn't ask if it was supported- I asked if anyone
new how to install a different version of dos!

You mean VPIX is not resetting the graphics mode...

No. I meant what I said. VP/ix can't get all the proper info from the
card, therefore if you leave it in an unknown state it doesn't know
about it, either the way it was, or the way it is.

Actually, one would think that all I/O to the registers are trapped by the
kernel. This makes it possible to know exactly what state even the
write-only registers are in. Whether or not this is being done
thoroughly is a question I can not answer.

However, the problem *may* not be VP/ix but rather the virtual terminals.
The following is specific to ISC's 386/ix, but the problems to be solved
are non-trivial and I could easily see SCO running into the same troubles.
I've noticed, on rare occasion, that regular UNIX programs that put
a virtual terminal into a graphics mode can also exhibit the problem
where switching out and then back leaves the screen blank. This doesn't
happen very often, but I've seen it with X-windows and with
graphics programs written here that tweek EGA registers.

I'm running VP/ix 1.1 and Xenix 2.3.1. I've got a 386AT
and the GENOA VGA card (model 5100). I got the Genoa VGA
card because it is highly recommended by AUTOCAD. Please
let me try and explain.

Those green lines spaced about 1/8th inch apart running the
full length of the screen are a problem! A get this mess when
I run any graphics programs. (AUTOCAD, FIRST PUBLISHER, FLIGHT SIMULATOR)
So far the only way I've found to get rid of the lines is to
execute vpix and exit back to xenix.
