[comp.unix.xenix] Yet Another Slow Printer

daveh@marob.MASA.COM (Dave Hammond) (01/31/89)

I know this has been thrashed around a hundred times, but I've got
a problem with a slow parallel printer that just won't go away.

The system is an Everex 386, 20Mhz., running SCO 2.3.1. The printer is an
ancient Okidata Microline 84. It ran just fine under 2.1 on an original
AT and 2.2 on a Compaq 10Mhz 286. On the 386 it runs at 1 line every few
seconds.

I've tried the polling (lp0i) drivers and they do no better. Unfortunately,
the manual for the Oki is long since gone, so I haven't a clue what
interface options I might try to change.

I'm just shy of giving up and buying a serial interface module for the
thing. Anyone have any clues?

BTW, I notice the stty for lp0 (during printing) has a vtime setting of
20 (or so-- this is from memory). I thought this might account for the
strange timing, but any attempts to lower it result in no significant
difference. Does this value have its usual meaning (eg, block for vtime
tenth-secs, or until min chars are available) on parallel interfaces?

Apparently SCO has a fix for v2.3.1 for slow parallel printers, call SCO
support, or Email them, for the fix, I don't recall the fix number.

FYI There are some other fixes available for v2.3.1

	o	Cron problem
o	PS - seek error problem
	o	a problem with MAPKEY
o	a problem with RTS/CTS on serial lines

These are the ones that interested me, there are others which didn't
apply to my situation, It may be an idea to ask if there are any others.

In article <613@dms.UUCP> morris@dms.UUCP (Jim Morris) writes concerning
a patch available for slow parallel printers:

Thanks to all who responded and informed me about the patch. I want
to thank Jim, also, for mentioning the other fixes available for 2.3.1.

When I asked SCO for a list (while ordering the slow printer patch), they
responded that a list of available fixes was only provided to current
tech support contract holders. If I understand this correctly, I can *order*
the patch and have it sent UPS 2-day (at no charge) -- but I can't get a list
of the available patches? Hmmm... [isn't that sort-of like having permission
to open() and read() a file, but not the directory it resides in? :-)]
