[comp.unix.xenix] Function of kbmode

How does the command "kbmode" function? (Xenix/386 2.3) According to
the manuals, it sets the keyboard mode to either AT or XT, and I notice
that in XT mode the separate cursor key group in Ctrl state print digits
like the numeric keypad, and Print Screen gives "*", while not doing so
in AT mode.

What is this "mode" really? Where does it take place? In the keyboard
driver or in he keyboard, or some place else? Noone I've asked this
far admits to the keyboard having any modes at all.

And, BTW, most of the mapkey files have the left-arrow and the
right-arrow keys of the cursor key group swapped in AT mode. (International
