As a relative newcomer to Unix (though I have administered another type of network system for the last five years) and as the sole person here capable of administering our new Xenix system, I made an educated guess (based on the SCO 2.3.1 installation docs) to follow their recommendation and create a separate /u filesystem (page 2-6 to 2-7 of the XENIX Installation Guide). I liked the idea that I would likely gain speed, faster backups, and better crash security... but I was unaware that some commands (like ln(C)) do not work across filesystems. While installing Menushell recently, I tried to use their linkusers script to ln some programs to various user's home directories, and of course I was unable to do so. I figure I can just create a /u/bin directory and copy the commands I want to link there, which will lose me some space and some standardization, but would be an acceptable workaround, I guess. Can someone suggest a better one? Also, what other problems am I going to run into with this configuration that the installation manual didn't warn me about, except in the most general of all possible senses? What other commonly used commands don't work across filesystems? Would I be better off backing up everything and reinstalling now, before the system begins to be heavily used? And SCO, if you are listening, would you please include in your installation notes a list of commands that do not work across filesystems, so that other relative novices who have to make this decision are a little better informed? You've done a great job with your revision of docs from 2.2 to 2.3, particularly in the System Adminsisttator's Guide, and I appreciate it, but this one thing, had I known it then, would likely have convinced me to decide otherwise. All responses appreciated. If sufficient interest, I will post a summary. -- "Still I sing bonny boys, bonny mad boys, | Tom Betz, 114 Woodworth Bedlam boys are bonny, | Yonkers, NY 10701-2509 For they all go bare, and they live by the air, | (914) 375-1510 And they want nor drink nor money." - Steeleye Span | tbetz@dasys1.UUCP
