/ hpopd:comp.dcom.lans / ian@hpopd.HP.COM (Ian Watson) / 5:15 pm Apr 20, 1989 / I've just started out in the big, bad UN*X world and am looking for some pretty general information, or pointers to it. I'm looking at the datacomm possibilities for a distributed application, whereby there is an application on a bog-standard PC running MS-DOS which needs to communicate with a server on a 386/XENIX box (or UNIX V.3.2/386 when it comes, if necessary). The starting point is that the DOS application exists, and can communicate both over asynchronous and Ethernet-based LAN connections. However, at the moment it connects to an HP proprietary system, and talks proprietary protocols, so these datacomm bits will probably need replacing. The XENIX server doesn't exist yet. Does anyone out there have any info/suggestions as to what might be worth investigating ? I know this is pretty general, but that just reflects the stage I'm at ! Hopefully this will turn into a flood of replies. No need to restrict it to deep-down technical info -- any info on what's in the marketplace, how popular it is, standards compliance, terms of use/licensing etc. would be most useful too. Also, what are your favourite UN*X mags/pubs and who publishes them ? (I've noticed ref's to 'root' mag. in some notes responses. Info. please.) Replies by MAIL, please. Oh boy, if ever there was an open invitation... Ian Watson ian@hpopd.HP.COM ----------
