The "nn" news reader is very close to working on SCO XENIX 386.
There are two bugs. In "xmakefile", change near the bottom
* this is probably non-portable so it is ifdef'ed
to:

Cpp is used to generate the makefile, and the unbalanced quote causes problems.
Similar problems at the top of "prefix.sh". I changed:

I've got a "m-i80386.h" and a "s-xenix386.h" if anybody wants to mess around
with this. However, IMHO I haven't quite been convinced to give up rn yet.

If anyone gets nn to run in the SCO Xenix 386 2.3.1 & up environment, please e-mail me. We do not have a developments system and would like to receive a compiled version. I have even played around a bit with it and since I haven managed to make rn/vrn work with the beta TMNN, I am happy to have a very nice interface to netnews that works with TMNN. ( I just have to convince tmnn expire to read NN rc files.) It does deal with the volatile expire features of tmnn (news 3.0).
