I'm sure this has been answered before, but I wasn't paying attention... We need advice on smart serial boards that work with 386/ix. Horror stories and success stories are appreciated, as well as any hard facts on performance, compatibility, etc. We anticipate a need for at least 32 ports, and possibly 48 or 64 ports. The ports will support terminals. Most of the traffic will be output, probably at 9600 but maybe at 19.2. Input will be from hunk-and-peck typists. We are interested in 8 or 16 port boards, AT bus. We will be needing quantities in the several thousands per year. Mail to me and I'll summarize... -Rick -- Rick Richardson | JetRoff "di"-troff to LaserJet Postprocessor|uunet!pcrat!dry2 PC Research,Inc.| Mail: uunet!pcrat!jetroff; For anon uucp do:|for Dhrystone 2 uunet!pcrat!rick| uucp jetroff!~jetuucp/file_list ~nuucp/. |submission forms. jetroff Wk2200-0300,Sa,Su ACU {2400,PEP} 12013898963 "" \d\r\d ogin: jetuucp

There has been a lot of talk lately about how so-and-so can run N users on their 386 using smart serial boards. So my question is simply what boards people prefer to use. I know about Digiboards, but what others are available? Price? Please e-mail me your preferences, etc. Thanx. -- Bill Mahoney bill@zycor.UUCP Warning: Driver breaks for 2400 baud.

Arnet: SmartPort 8-ports, about $1000 Decent performance (we have a couple of trailblazers on it right now and it doesn't die). Hardware guaranteed forever. We have been using Arnet stuff for years and it is very reliable. Stargate: ACL 8-ports, don't know price Slower than the Arnet stuff but I haven't made any serious measurements. We have this on a system in our classroom and it has worked fine (except for the first Unix for Programmers class where a student created a shell script called load and tried to run it. All comm crashed. Turns out that the Stargate install script puts the download program for the board in /usr/bin, calls it load and makes it executable for anyone. Oh well.) -- Phil Hughes, SSC, Inc.
