[comp.unix.xenix] Installing news on SCO Xenix 386

llz@well.UUCP (Lyle Zumbach) (07/14/89)

This is my first news posting ... please be gentle.

I have just subscribed to UUNET and I am trying to install Version
2.11 B of netnews on my Compaq 386/20/4MB RAM running SCO XENIX 386
Version 2.3.1. The software seems to compile just fine, but when
I try to run readnews or postnews I get the following error:

readnews: Segmentation violation -- Core dumped

Also, should I be installing C news? Can someone tell me how to get
it from the well or via anonymous UUCP?

I would greatly appreciate any help or advice in solving this
problem, and getting the netnews software properly installed.

Being new to Unix communications and Usenet, I have been learning a
great deal (but not quite enough) from two fine books on the subjects:

Managing uucp and Usenet
O'Reilly & Associates

Unix Communications
by Bart Anderson, Bryan Costales, and Harry Henderson
Howard W. Sams & Company

Your patience is appreciated.

I have been getting the same error for some time. We are running
the binaries sco distributed free. It seems to manifest itself
on our system (286 sco 2.2.1/5MEG Ram) whenever there are new
directories created in the news SPOOLDIR in large numbers.

We have been able to manually (I hate that word) remedy the problem
by removing (gutting) all directories and their subdirectories in
the SPOOLDIR and then running "expire -r" followed by expire -e2.

This is a temporary solution however, since usually in a month or
so the problem surfaces again, forcing this song-and-dance to be
repeated.

Can anyone tell me what is actually causing this problem? Any
suggested permanent solutions. Apparently, since 386's are
also seeing this, is it fair to suggest there might be a bug?
Just conjecture on my part.
Thanks in advance.
Bart
By the way, running expire -e2 daily seems to by some time
inbetween manifestations.

I've been running 2.11.17 version on Xenix/286 2.2.1 without a hitch.
I will admit that I use vnews instead of readnews, which might
explain why I never have seen the error.

For those interested, I ran 2.11.14 on Xenix/86 for a couple years
without any major problems. (except cpu cycles :^) )

2.11 B news patchlevel 14 compiled under SCO XENIX V 2.3.1 using the
2.2 development system without problems. The later patches add XENIX
support, if I remember correctly. I was told by a local news
administrator to avoid patches after 15, as he had had trouble with
them of an unspecified nature.

There are a number of public access uucp sites for comp.sources.[misc,unix]
sources, including mine:  814 337 0348 (1200/2400); 814 337 3159 (2400-TB+);
login of "pdsrc" with list of files in /usr/spool/pdsrc/all.subjects or
login of "uucp" with list of files in /usr/spool/uucppublic/my.directory. Tlhis
will shortly include C news. I am upgrading to a 386 box so things are a
little disorganized now..
