I recently purchased a 3.5" floppy, so sorry if I found out about this a few years too late ;-) According to the documentation for 2.2.3 a 1.44M floppy is supported as minor device 60 [ 61 as the B: drive ]. I've tried to format floppies on it and format complains that it is not a formatable device.
