Does anybody out there have the name (or source) for a good UNIX/XENIX file compression utility? One known to work harmelessly with Informix database files would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. -- Paul Rocchi * RKT Computer Services Limited * 4380 South Service Rd, Unit 25 * Burlington, Ontario, Canada * *******************************************************************************

Compress, a widely available unix utility, compiles targeted for xenix systems as an option. It is widely available by means of anonymous ftp from several sites. I don't remember where I got mine, but try uunet.uu.net and tut.cis.ohio-state.edu for starters.

SCO Xenix 2.3 386 has a compress program that works _very_ well (lots of compression), which we have used for all types of files, including Informix and executables. We often will compress, send to a customer's remote site via uucp and then uncompress. Sum always matches. Jeff Mo, Vision-Ease MIS department, Optifacts division. Compress/uncompress/zcat is part of the 386 Xenix release. It was not part of the earlier 286 versions, we traded up to 386 so I don't know if SCO is shipping compress with the 286 system. Compress comes with the net-news package, too. Compress will work far better than pack with database files, since such files typically have repeating fields. -- Len Reed Holos Software, Inc. I have passed files to and from a variety of machines. I have sent Xenix compressed files to Unisys, Arix, AT&T systems, running PD compress, and had no trouble either way. The PD compress utility seems just as fast as the Xenix one. I have tried some of the other ones, but found that I can send compress source via UUCP, compile, and then send other files to be extracted with very little chance of problems. bruce -- ========================================================================= Bruce A.
