Here are some things I found after installing update R (2.3.2) for the 286: I first tried doing an "update" instead of a "reinstall", but I received multiple "no space on dev 31/1" (pipe device on the root floppy I believe) errors. When I contacted SCO, the tech guy told me I had a large "regular" file in the /dev directory on the hard disk which the update procedure was trying to copy to memory (via the pipe device). Sure enough, he was right, but even after removing it I still received these errors. I was then told to just do a re-install instead. The "TIMEOUT=n" string in /etc/default/boot appears to have no effect. The manual also states that if this string is not present, a default time of 60 seconds is used when autobooting. On my system it's more like 5 seconds. This stuff is documented in autoboot(ADM) and boot(HW). The new w(C) command (also linked to uptime(C)) doesn't work. It just fails with "w: seek error". uptime(C) does generally work unless you use the -w option. SCO said this had been reported, and they would send me a fix when available. On page 62 of the Operating System Release Notes, there are adb patches for changing the windows and pktime values in the uucico binary. I could not get either one to work until I installed the new version of adb from the N2 disk (5 1/4 media). It doesn't get installed during the normal install procedure. The old version would respond with an error about "bad segment" if I used the patch exactly as shown in the release notes. If I started it (adb) manually and typed the commands interactively, no errors would be produced, but adb would not change the value of the symbols. With the new version of adb, using the patch exactly as shown will still give some complaints, but appears to change the values correctly. Manually starting the new version and typing the commands interactively works fine. If you didn't know, 2.3.2 also contains HDB uucp, which so far has been working fine. You can now have dialup passwords for use with modem lines (You could actually use these for any tty line if you wished). You can also enable time-of-login recording which will display your last login time each time you log in. Finger(C) will also display a user's last login time if the user is not currently logged in. Both of these are documented in chapter 5, section 7 of the System Administrator's Guide. The time-of-login stuff is documented so that it appears it is to be used only with dialin passwords, but this isn't the case. It should have been given it's own section number in the manual. Anyone else have any bug reports or interesting tidbits about update R for the 286? By the way, update R is for the OS only. The development and text processing systems are not available yet. still waiting for my R update; but got the T update. It turns out to be just an online manual. I do not understand why they call it a Text Processing package update. Does anyone know what is the cost to the end-user?
