[comp.unix.xenix] Smail 3.x breaks on UUCP Version 2 headers.

peter@ficc.uu.net (Peter da Silva) (12/08/89)

In UUCP version 2 (found in V7 UNIX, many versions of Xenix, and so on) mail
looks like this when it reaches a machine:

From xxxx <date> remote from site
	>From user <date>
	Subject: whatever
	Other: header-lines.

	body of message.

xxxx is *usually* uucp, but may be whoever is logged in on the console at
the time. This seems to confuse smail 3.x (currently in alpha testing
at some sites), which drop both these lines and turn them into:

	From Postmaster <date>
	Received-by: stuff including "smail 3.0"...
	From: Postmaster
	Message-ID: <very-long@smail.3.x.site>
	Subject: whatever
	Other: header-lines.

	body of message.

This might be perfectly in accordance with RFC 2^n-1, but it's not very
friendly. And considering the number of old Xenix machines out there (until
fairly recently, most UNIX installations were Radio Shack model 16s
running Xenix!), it'd probably be a good idea for the new smail to follow
the footsteps of its predecessor and look for this pattern. Smail 2.5
has no problem with it.
