[comp.unix.xenix] VP/ix problems

jon@chiron.UUCP (Jon L. Griffeth) (06/20/89)

Note: I'm posting this for someone else.

We've been having problems using Crosstalk and SimPC under VP/ix.
They appear to work fine when calling a system using 8 databits, no parity
and 1 stop bit. However, when using 7 databits, even parity and 1 stop bit,
SOME of the characters received from the other machines are duplicated.

For example, if we were expecting:

	"please log in:"

we might instead receive:

	"pplleasse llogg inn::"

Please note that these are not characters we are typing, but characters sent
by the remote system. Does anyone have any idea what is causing this?

System Specifics:

	Unisys 950 (I think, it's a 386 box)
	SCO Xenix 2.31
	VP/ix 1.0

Thanks in advance,
Jon L. Griffeth

Make sure the serial adapters do not have a 8250_ or 8250B UART
part installed. If so, replace with a 8250A, 82C50 or 16450. If your bus
speed is above 4 MHZ, you really should have a 16450 or 82C50 since all
the others have too slow a recovery time, resulting in double reads of status
and dubious success in programming the chip. The 8250_ / 8250B have numerous
race conditions that are unimportant if you aren't using interrupts (MS-DOS)
but fatal if you are (XENIX/UNIX). All pre-AT IBM adapter cards and many
current clones used/use the 8250_ so the BIOS would be happy (in pre-AT, it
was coded to expect the bugs.)

Finally, make sure the modems are not set for LOCAL COPY or anything weird
like that.

"If we took the bugs out, it wouldn't be MS-DOS, would it?"

I'm running a 33mhz 80386 machine under SCO Xenix 2.3.3GT with VP/ix. We
have a computone 6port intelliport with Wyse99GT's. When I run VP/ix under
wyse60 emulation, the echo back rate to the terminal is very very slow.
Especially if I'm running word perfect 4.2 under VP/ix. SCO provided me
with a patch that was supposed to speed up the sluggishness but it
made no difference. I can almost be one half a line ahead in typing
before it catches up with me. It's a real pain in the a$$ for my secretary.

It seems to be slow on the console too, but not as bad.

Does anybody have this problem also? It's not just Word Perfect 4.2 that
is slow. Its slow anytime, with 1 or 5 users logged on.

Also, the vpix manual says it does not support graphics on a serial
terminal. Has anybody proved them wrong?

Thanks in advance,
Perry Minyard
