Does anyone know if, when, & where they'll be
touring this summer. Any info would be greatly
appreciated.

thanks.

I have the latest two Simple Minds albums (SPARKLE IN THE RAIN and
NEW GOLD DREAM) and really like both of them, especially the instrumental
numbers.  I like them SO MUCH that I'd like to get more of their albums;
however, most if not all of the rest of the Simple Minds albums that I have
seen are imports and have a different line-up than that of the last two.
I'd appreciate input on the similarity of the older albums to the newer ones-
do SM sound more or less the same ~4-5 yrs ago as they do now? Also, there
are a lot of 3 song EP's out (also imports) --any suggestions to which ones
to get?

			thanks

Always glad to help a fellow Rosen...

Very highly recommended are their second and third albums, "Real to Real
Cacophony" ("Real to Real", "Carnival", "Veldt", "Premonition", "Changeling",
"Film Theme") and "Empires and Dance" ("I Travel", "Celebrate", "Capital City",
"Twist/Run/Repulsion"). Also their fourth and fifth albums (which were
originally released together), "Sons and Fascination" ("Love Song", "In
Trance as Mission") and "Sister Feelings Call" ("Theme for Great Cities",
"The American"). The best of these albums was released in the USA by
some American record company as "Themes for Great Cities", and although
I didn't pick it up (I have all these albums already), it looked like a
good collection (if it is still findable). I recommend their earlier stuff
(these four albums I just mentioned, especially "RtRC" and "E&D") much more
than their more recent stuff, which is only a shadow of the former powerful
sound, although Kerr of late has indeed become a much more dynamic performer
than he used to be.

Regarding earlier Simple Minds LPs:

My personal favorite is "Sons and Fascinations", which is somewhat like "New Gold Dream" as far as style is concerned (more so than "Sparkle in the Rain" is).
It was originally released as a double LP, but now I have only seen it
as two separate single LPs, with "Sister Feelings Call" being the other
disc. If you like instrumentals, there exist several on "Sister Feelings
Call"; there are none on "Sons and Fascinations".

Another good LP is "Celebration", a compilation of works in the 79-81
time frame. Here their style is slightly different (perhaps a bit
harsher). It contains songs from the "Life in a Day" and "Reel to Reel Canopy"
(sp?) LPs, plus other cuts. I prefer this compilation over
the separate LPs, as the earlier LPs did not seem to have the
consistency that the later LPs did.

Although each album has differences in style (I think "New Gold Dream"
and "Sparkle in the Rain" are quite different), there is no
huge change in style in the band from their earlier releases, despite
personal changes. I especially recommend "Sons and Fascinations".

Are there any other Simple Minds fans out there? Anyone else
who finds the textures of songs such as "New Gold Dream",
"Speed Your Love", "Book of Brilliant Things", "Colors Fly and
Catherine Wheel", and of course the infinitely splendid
"Up on the Catwalk" to be just the right thing?
