[comp.unix.xenix] Speeding up a 2 disk Xenix/386-2.3.1 system

tan@bronson.UUCP (Tan Bronson) (01/10/90)

I've got two ST-4096 disks on my Xenix system and am looking to
speed it up and was wondering how much benefit a second WD1006 controller
would give me. (I'm not sure I'm willing to risk using RLL on my ST-4096)
I'm aware of the caching controllers, but I figure these are the last
ST-506 disks I will never buy, so I'm reluctant to spend more money which
is not applicable to SCSI (or ESDI).
Also can 2.3.1 support multiple swap devices?

A new WD1006 will cost me roughly $100, so it's the cheapest solution
I can find. The next step is to buy some larger disks, but this requires
me to buy new disks, controller, and if I use SCSI a new OS!

    thanks in advance.

p.s. will SCO 3.2 support two WD1006 and a SCSI board ?

I certainly can't say that you should try RLL, but I have run 4096 and
251 RLL with no problems (at least none with the WD1006VSR2 controller).

The 1006 RLL has hardware track buffering. This gave me about 3:1
improvement in Xenix performance.

I pass on that, I've seen some things but have never tried.

A good reason to at least try an RLL version. If you don't like it you
can always go back and sell the used controller. Small investment. You
don't get much performance improvement from two controllers, while two
disks reduces the seeks and does help.

The problem with the WD is that (the ones I've used) there is no easy
way to reset the addresses and interrupts. The Adaptek can reset the
ports, as I recall, but the interrupt needs a little external wiring. I
don't claim that even if you did this that the configuration would work,
but I would expect it to, since the GT version is mostly the standard
version with SCSI added.
