[comp.unix.xenix] ESIX

rho@maccs.dcss.mcmaster.ca (Raymond Ho) (11/10/89)

Hi everyone,

I'm plan to get a set of Unix Sys V variant for my 386 computer.
However, there're so many of them out there and I hope you guys/gals and
help.

I've heard of the one called "ESIX". Its price interests me very much.
From the ads, $895 US includes:

OS System V 3.2 (they said it is an enhanced version of AT&T Sys V 3.2)

	Development Tools

Xwindow 11.?? ( forgot what exactly how they said it )

	TCP/IP

multi-user license (up to 32 users)

also some reports claim that ESIX is the fastest Unix Sys V available for pcs.

Do you know anything about this ESIX? They said it is compatible at
binary level with Xenix and Unix, is it true?

Thanx!

I'll take exception to the 'a couple of hundred' if I may. The $995 value is
right I believe for single user, Multi-user is $1500 more (now this gives
multi-user rights for all bundled packages) and if you want development
tools that's another $1500 (again development tools for all bundle packages
if appropriate) and this does bring us upto the $3500+ range. My complete
386-20 system only cost $2400 with 4Mb and 120 Mb disk.

With writing device drivers, etc I do need the development stuff, and with 6
kids in the house I definitely need mult-user. BTW, I do understand
that one can get some of the packages in an un-bundled upgrade (ie standard
C development system only but not X, NFS, etc)

SCO Unix is definitely aiming towards middle size systems

Are there any rumors about an upgrade path from SCO XENIX 386 to
SCO Open Desktop? I know that there is a path available for XENIX
to UNIX.

There currently is an upgrade path from SCO Xenix to Unix - but I'm not
sure about Open Desktop.
