Has anyone used the XNS protocols on 4.2BSD? We have a professor who is getting an Iris terminal (later upgraded to workstation) who doesn't want to throw away $4,000 on the floppy disk to load the TCP/IP software. -tcs Terry Slattery U.S. Naval Academy 301-267-4413 ARPA: tcs@brl-bmd UUCP: decvax!brl-bmd!usna!tcs

Terry, Silicon Graphics (Greg Chession) has an XNS like package for BSD 4.2. This package allows vaxen to talk successfully to their equipment (Iris) on a single net. Greg's software is solid, but I advise you not to mistake it for a complete XNS implementation. In the pieces that he has chosen to implement he has conformed to the specs very well, but he has (at present) severe limitations on the usage of his package ==> It will not work with Xerox product software. If you have SGI equipment, it's probably very worthwhile to install Greg's "XNS" package, but if what you want is full XNS you should probably wait a little longer.
