[comp.unix.xenix] SCSI Termination/AHA1542 Query

russell@kings.co.uk (Russell Brown) (02/07/90)

How does one terminate the SCSI bus? can the net.helpful.people assist me
with this problem.

I have a portable (lunchbox style) system fitted with an Adaptec 1542A
SCSI controller. The connections to the Hard Disk are from the internal
IDC connector on the 1542, but the tape drive lives outside the box and
uses the 50 way D type external connector on the 1542. Therefore I have
removed the bus termination pullups from the 1542 just like TFM says.

When I go walkabout with the machine I want to leave the tape on the
desk but this will leave the SCSI external bus unterminated. Grovelling
around inside the box and refitting the 1542 pullups is NOT something
that I really want to do!

How therefore, should I terminate the SCSI bus? Can someone tell me which
pins on the 50 way connector I should connect via some value of resistor?

Many thanks in advance. Post or EMAIL - I'll summarise if requested.

What tape drive are you using (Make/Model)?

Our Excabyte tape drive (purchased oem from Prime Computer) came with a
terminating resistor set built into a 50-pin parallel type male plug.
It says "AMP 868875-1 Termination Connector". One of these should solve
your problem. Just unplug the tape drive and cable, and plug in the
terminator.

Good luck
