Here at RSI we are having some thoughts that must be pretty common these days among SCO 386 Xenix users. It appears that SCO is not going to put much more into their Xenix product so those of us who want to stay current must eventually move to Unix. The question is when and how much will it hurt? The answer, at the moment, appears to be "Lots!" An upgrade from 386 Xenix to unix is $500 (I'm using round numbers here). By the time you add the bits and pieces needed to upgrade this to what is included in open desktop then you'll have spent about as much as just buying that package without any upgrade. Two user open desktop $1000 Multi-user upgrade $1500 Development system $1500 Either I have mis-understood what SCO told me on the phone the other day or it is going to cost us $4000 to stay in the market place. Can this be right? The issue has recently become more urgent because we are looking at installing a tcp-ip network in the near future. To do this on our Xenix system we need to buy TCP-IP + Streams + Xenix-Net. The last two items are throw away's when we upgrade to Unix. I've been using SCO Xenix for 3 or 4 years now, and have recommended SCO to many, many people. Now I am asking a question I didn't expect to ever ask: What other vendors can provide a mature 386 unix OS/Dev sys/Network package and at what cost? -- _____________________________________________________________________________ Frank I.
