[comp.unix.xenix] Everex ESIX vs. SCO Xenix/Unix

annala@neuro.usc.edu (A J Annala) (03/12/90)

I am astounded that SCO is abandoning support for Xenix. We are being
strontgly pressured by a third party image processing system supplier
to convert out existing unix system from IBM Unix V2.0 to SCO Xenix --
now I learn SCO Xenix is disappearing -- and upgrade to SCO Unix might
not be immediately possible because our image processing product will
need modification to run under SCO Unix -- and eventual upgrade will
cost us an additional $1000 ... Maybe I should pressure my vendor to
convert to the lower cost Everix ESIX system?

What experience (favorable and unfavorable) do people have with ESIX?

Thanks, AJ

I have ESIX 3.2 rel B and find it a good solid AT&T port. There were
a few problems but Everex seems to putting a lot of effort into fixing
them. One thing that is probably important is dealing with someone who
is committed to the ESIX product rather than some dealer who just carries
it because they carry the rest of the Everex line.

Perhaps you should give us some idea of what you want to do and people
can give you specific advice based on their experience. I don't mean
telling us your specific application but do you need X-Windows, RFS,
curses etc.

If a program runs under ESIX it will run under ix386 and SCO UNIX as
well, unless it deliberately uses a non-standard feature. Of course
Xenix programs will run under V.3, too, so that's not a big problem.

What is the status of the ESIX fast file system being released in
rev D?
