Thanks for the mail on UPS systems. The response was whelming, but not overwhelming. The major points to report are: 1. The only UPS recommended was the BEST Power models, which have an integral ferro-res transformer. The xformer provides a 2000:1 attenuation on line disturbances. Most other units put but a few MOV's between your equipment and disaster. 2. A couple of folks had the opinion (similar to mine) that nothing available will protect you computer from a nearby strike. 3. I found it is worthwile to MEASURE your actual current requirements and not believe the UL stickers. For example, the total of all my equipment was 1800VA. Since the 386 is pretty full (2 big ESDI drives, 4 MB ram, EGA, computone board, etc..) I thought actual current would be close to the sticker. But when I wired up a doodad to connect the whole mess to my VOM, I found that with everything running I was actually drawing only 420VA! That means a much smaller and less expensive transformer. SO, I think I am going to be real cautious and buy a BEST ups with enough battery to give me an honest hour. Then I will continue to work when it rumbles, but plug the house power connection when it gets really biblical outside. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Neal Rhodes MNOP Ltd (404)- 972-5430 President Lilburn (atlanta) GA 30247 Fax: 978-4741 uunet!emory!jdyx!mnopltd!neal Or uunet!gatech!stiatl!mnopltd!neal ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
