[comp.unix.xenix] Strange VP/ix behavior

jmr@motown.UUCP (John M. Ritter) (05/09/90)

I'm confused why the following situation is happening:

The system is a Tandy 4000LX, SCO Xenix 2.3.3GT, SCO VP/ix 1.1.1,
3 344 Meg CDC Hard drives, 1 150 Meg Cipher tape drive, 1.44 meg
floppy, 5.25" 1.2 Meg floppy, Arnet smartport 8 board and lots
of scotch tape.

We have spent an embarrassingly large ($??,000) sum of money for an
application that runs under DOS. The application uses Revelation as a
base and requires a super-duper-amazing-stupid-security device that
plugs into COM1, without which the application will not run.

Now for the fun parts:

When booted under DOS, and installed under DOS, all is at peace with
the world. I suppose I can't complain, as this is the environment in
which the application was designed to run. However...

The installation runs fine under VP/ix IF the files are installed on
drive D: -- the REAL DOS partition. Running the application proceeds
until it tries to find the magic COM1 device and then fails. I might
be able to get around that some day... (so why can't i use one of my
arnet tty devices for COM1?) However...

If I install (and/or run) the application under a *XENIX* directory
(dosmount F:\USR\DOS), the program fails to execute! It comes up with:

Now, how or why could a program execute on drive D: but not F:? What's
different about them? I have verified that every file on D: is
identical to every file on F: Any ideas on else could be tried? The vendor
will most certainly not be helpful as VP/ix is not a "supported"
environment, but howcum this is so strange?

Thanks for any help you may be able to offer.
